A Spare Me

In an era of dwindling resources and population, the survival of humanity rests on its final generation. Individuals selected for their genius and skills are enrolled into specialty schools and given everything they need to survive and excel - including identical spare bodies in the events of their deaths. When one student dies in an accident at the start of the play, he begins to reconsider his evolving identity. While other students begin to reconsider their own identities and the identities of others, spares and primaries begin to go missing, and increasingly drastic and world-shaping developments begin to unfold. Written by A. Rey Pamatmat and first performed in 2012, A Spare Me looks at identity, what it means to “be” someone, what it means to let go of or hold onto a past you can or can’t quite remember, how societal expectations shape us, and the differences between malice and ignorance.
